Greek watermelon feta salad

A white plate with a mediterainian salad with watermelon, olive, feta and onion.

This refreshing salad draws inspiration from the Mediterranean region, where the marriage of sweet and savoury delights the palate and reflects the area’s rich cultural tapestry. You can often find this combination of ingredients in Greek cuisine. It’s a testament to the timeless combination of watermelon and feta cheese, both staples in Greek culinary traditions. In some areas it’s a staple (ie. Greece) but it also has variants in places like Turkey and the Middle East, where watermelon is paired with salty cheese for a refreshing summer treat.

Incorporating black olives and a hint of mint, this recipe takes on a vibrant character that is packed with flavour and very satisfying. It’s the perfect side dish for any Australian Christmas dinner party or any occasion that calls for a touch of Mediterranean flair.

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

  • In a large serving bowl, combine the cubed watermelon, black olives, and thinly sliced red onion.
  • Add the cubed or crumbled feta cheese to the bowl.

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar until well combined. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Drizzle the dressing over the salad and gently toss to combine, ensuring the watermelon and feta are well-coated but still retain their shape.
  • Garnish with fresh mint leaves (or basil if you prefer)
  • Serve immediately, or refrigerate for about 30 minutes to allow the flavours to meld together. Just make sure to give it a gentle stir before serving if it has been chilled.

  1. Panera’s Fuji Apple drizzled over salad, compliments this salad instead of olive oil & vinegar. It’s my favorite pairing
